Headstone Manor vs Clapton CFC preview: Women’s first team in Capital Cup action

After the heartache of the Women’s FA Cup defeat last weekend, Clapton Community FC’s women’s first team are straight back in cup action on Sunday.

The team faces a tricky visit in the Capital Cup to Headstone Manor, who proved tough opposition in last season’s league campaign.

The home fixture finished all square at 1-1. It took place one week after the win at Haringey Borough in the Women’s FA Cup, but with a healthy crowd behind the team on the park pitch at Wadham Lodge, the team struggled to break down Headstone Manor and had to come from a goal behind, with Marta Boiro heading home the equaliser.

The away fixture was our final league game of the 2021-22 season, this time taking place a week before a big cup fixture – the final of the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy.

Of course we all know now that we went on to win that final, but whether it was due the team having one eye on that final or not, the match was a bizarre, topsy-turvy contest played in heavy rain and fairly strong winds which finished Headstone Manor 4 Clapton Community FC 5! The CCFC goals were scored by Emily Link (3), Lenny Holmes, and Marta Casanovas, but as soon as one thought we would be comfortable, Headstone would find their way back into the game.

This season, Headstone Manor sit in 6th place in the 9-team Greater London Women’s Football League Premier Division.

They have played fewer fixtures than any of their league rivals, and have 7 points from their 5 games – 2 wins, 1 draw, and 2 defeats.

They have had some good results in the FA Cup, knocking out former CCFC opponents Biggleswade United in the first round qualifying, an 8-0 thrashing of Frontiers LFC of the Essex County Football League in the second round qualifying, before finally being beaten in third round qualifying by Ashford United. We know that pain only too well.
