Brentford vs Clapton CFC preview: Season opener for promoted women’s first team

Clapton CFC women’s first team open the league 2022/23 league campaign with an away fixture at Brentford on Sunday.

Having gained promotion to the London & South East Regional Women’s League Division One North, there will be new challenges after such an exciting 21/22 season.

Anticipation is high following the team’s phenomenal FA Cup run, three place finish in the league, before ending the season with victory in the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy final.

Brentford are familiar opposition having also been promoted from the Greater London Women’s Football League Premier the year before.

They finished last season in a creditable fourth place. A strong start to their new league, gaining some good results against the top teams along the way. Their top scorer, Ellen Wardlow netted 9 goals from 16 starts.

Last time out

We last faced Brentford in the stop-start 2020/21 season, winning our home game 3-1 on a very muddy Stray Dog pitch, with goals from Emily Link, Annie Lyons, and Caps Riom. The return fixture, which was played behind closed doors, ended in a 2-0 defeat.
