The new Essex Veterans League Division 3 West season could not have started in more dramatic fashion, as Clapton CFC Men’s Over 35s came from behind to secure a thrilling 5–3 victory over Hale End Athletic Reserves.
Clapton started brightly and were rewarded for their attacking intent with the opening goal by Phil Blakesley, taking a deserved 1–0 lead. However, Hale End grew into the game and grabbed an equaliser before half-time, leaving the match finely poised at 1–1 going into the break.
The second half began in disappointing fashion for Clapton, as Hale End struck twice in to establish a 3–1 advantage, despite Clapton controlling the game. At that point, it looked like a tough afternoon might be in store.
But this squad is built on resilience and togetherness. Refusing to give up, Clapton fought their way back into the contest, with fresh legs from the bench making a real difference. Two well-taken goals by Dan Lipman and Dominic Amodio respectively levelled things up at 3–3, swinging momentum firmly back in the Clapton’s favour.
Hale End sensed that the win has been snatched from them and they pushed hard to score another one. Clapton were not done yet either as they pressed for a winner. Their persistence eventually paid off. Two more goals by Sebastian Daron and Jason Hounsell capped off an incredible turnaround and sealed an opening-day 5–3 win for Clapton.
The result puts Clapton CFC Men’s Over 35s top of the Essex Veterans League Division 3 West table after the first round of fixtures — the perfect start to the 2025/26 campaign. With such a display of togetherness, determination, depth, and attacking quality, the team has laid down an early marker for the season ahead.
