Clapton CFC Men’s First Team win the Brian Lomax Cup for the first time

The Clapton CFC Men’s First Team won more silverware for the Old Spotted Dog Ground trophy cabinet after edging out Dunstable Town in the Brian Lomax Cup.

The team’s last competitive game was the SCEFL Division One Cup final in May, triumphing 3-1 against Forest Hill Park at Barking FC. On Saturday, Jack Francis was once again called upon to lift a trophy after CCFC came back from 2-1 down to win 4-3 against higher level opposition, although both sides of course were fielding experimental pre-season sides.

Clapton took an early lead thanks a great free-kick from Alasdair Gurney, headed home by a central defender Trialist. This was the 500th competitive goal scored by the Clapton CFC Men’s First Team (our stattos have decided that invitational cups count as competitive), hopefully we can name the scorer in due course.

Dunstable pulled level within a minute and that was how it stayed till half-time. In the second half, Dunstable took the lead on 52 minutes. However, that same defender Trialist turned provider on 65 minutes with a great long ball from defence to another Trialist who tucked it home.

On 73 minutes, CCFC were back ahead, when Fred Taylor’s powerful shot from outside the box was well parried by Dunstable’s young goalkeeper, but Cameron Gordon was on hand to sweep in the rebound off the post.

There was a fourth on 85 minutes, Taylor’s corner seemed to go straight in, although several players claimed to have got a final touch.

Dunstable pulled one back in added time from the penalty spot, but that proved to be the last kick of the game and the trophy (well, shield) was ours. This was our fourth time lucky in the Football Supporters Association cup competition after defeats against Enfield Town and FC United of Manchester twice in previous years.
