The Clapton CFC Men’s First Team secured their first victory in the Essex Senior League since promotion with a hard-fought late win over Saffron Walden Town.
The three points provided the perfect send-off for forward Cameron Gordon on his final appearance before moving to Australia, but it was substitute Andre Odeku who produced the moment of magic to win it.
Geoff Ocran’s side came into the fixture searching for their maiden Step 5 league win and were put to the test immediately by a dangerous Saffron Walden side.
Within the first minute, Jack Francis produced a sharp reaction save to keep out a header from The Bloods’ Sam Black. Shortly after, Francis denied Jamal Obeng’s low effort before defender Emmanuel Olasehinde made a crucial goal-line challenge.
Clapton gradually worked their way into the contest, creating opportunities of their own. Joel Akuwudike’s lofted free-kick found Gordon, whose looping header drifted just over the bar.
Minutes later, Julian Austin saw his glancing header cleared off the line by Walden defender Jack Clarke.
Just before the interval, Austin delivered a heroic defensive recovery to tracking back and clear Obeng’s dangerous low cross at the far post.
On the stroke of half-time, Clapton were forced into an early change due to a nasty challenge to Fred Taylor, paving the way for Odeku to enter the fray.
Saffron Walden began the second half with intensity, forcing another early save from Francis before Okwute Izuchukwu was called upon to clear a follow-up effort off the goal-line.
In the 61st minute, Odeku pounced on a loose ball in midfield and drove forward, laying it off to Gordon, whose effort flashed just wide of the near post. Gordon was denied again moments later when Samba Badjana’s skilful run set up the departing striker for a low strike inside the box.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute. Receiving the ball wide on the right edge of the penalty area, Odeku spotted George Coton off his line. Showing incredible vision, the substitute executed a sublime lofted chip into the back of the net.
Saffron Walden threw bodies forward and in the 88th minute, a flicked-on header released Sam Deering one-on-one, but Francis rushed off his line to make a match-winning block at the edge of his box.
However, Clapton held firm to secure their first league victory of the campaign and give Gordon a fitting farewell.
