Clapton CFC turned in arguably their most complete and convincing performance of the season, defeating third-placed Ilford 3–1 at the Old Spotted Dog Ground.
Geoff Ocran was able to field the same starting eleven for two games in a row for the first time this season, while Jeff Twumasi and Ross Broadway returned to the matchday squad and new signing Tylla Addai named among the substitutes following his arrival from Ilford.
The home side started with confidence and broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. Fred Taylor delivered a wonderful, deep cross from the flank, and Andre Odeku arrived at the far post to turn the ball home and give the hosts a deserved 1–0 lead.
Towards the end of the half, a defensive mix-up presented Korahn Gayle with an opportunity, but Ilford goalkeeper Ben Szubski reacted well to make a sharp save.
In the second half, CCFC continued to carve out openings, with Emmanuel Olasehinde driving forward on a superb run before crossing for Gayle, who headed just over.
Clapton’s dominance was rewarded with a crucial second goal in the 73rd minute. Odeku seized control and unleashed a sensational, long-range strike that flew past the keeper to double the lead and spark jubilant celebrations.
Odeku thought he had his hat-trick shortly after, only for the effort to be ruled out.
As the game ticked into added time, Ilford were handed a lifeline when the referee awarded a penalty. Former Clapton FC striker Greg Akpele stepped up and converted from the spot in the 92nd minute to make it 2–1, threatening a nervy finish.
However, any anxiety was instantly dispelled right from the restart. Clapton swept straight back on the attack, and substitute Broadway produced a moment of absolute magic, lofting a delightful, precise effort over the goalkeeper to make it 3–1 in the 93rd minute.
Speaking after a well-deserved three points, manager Geoff Ocran reflected on an outstanding display from start to finish:
“Today, if we’re talking from start to finish and taking into account the opposition as well, I think it was definitely our best performance of the season. The back four and midfield foundation were solid, and we utilised our weapons up top.”
On Ross Broadway’s spectacular clincher after working hard to get back into the squad, Ocran added:
“Ross is often the unlucky man who may miss out on starting, but he sticks at it. He deserved that moment just for his consistency and for being a good member of the squad. He scored with a lofted finish like he’s been doing in training, and it was great to see everyone celebrate with him.”
Julian Austin also highlighted the team’s bravery on the ball and the growing chemistry across the side:
“It’s great, we played a bit braver on the ball today and we unlocked them quite a few times. It felt like we looked quite dangerous going forward. The balance across the team was pretty good, and everyone who came on put in amazing shifts. It was a great team performance from minute one.”
