New Cable Street 90 mural at the Old Spotted Dog Ground

Not then, not now – a new mural to celebrate the Battle of Cable Street has been painted on the corner of the Old Spotted Dog Ground Clubhouse.

It was commissioned by Unite the Union and created by Ruff Draft Design to mark 90 years since tens of thousands of people came together to stop Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists from marching and terrorising the East End’s Jewish community.

The mural features an historic image of anti-fascist demonstrators gathered behind a wooden street barricade in East London on 4 October 1936.

Chalked on the barricade are the words “Remember Olympia” and “They Shall Not Pass” — a powerful reminder of the resistance that brought thousands of East Londoners together to oppose fascism.

Here are some of the photos – and the image it’s based upon.
