Match report from the Old Spotted Dog Ground as the Clapton CFC Over 35s faced Coppermill Swifts in a nine-goal thriller in their debut at the ground.
Dreams were realised, fans enthralled, and managers’ nerves shredded during an unforgettable night at the Old Spotted Dog Ground, as Clapton’s grizzled Over 35s made their much-anticipated debut at the stadium which has become a second home for many of them as fans. What ensued for those in attendance was a 9-goal, back-and-forth encounter, which was packed with entertainment and drama in equal measure.
Management had earlier in the week made the bold decision to go with a 30-strong squad for the game, a situation which might otherwise have caused some unrest in most dressing rooms. Fortunately, the incredible spirit and togetherness that have become integral within the CCFC Over 35s, meant that every player embraced the opportunity and rose to the occasion as one.

Coming off the back of two impressive wins (scoring 6 on both occasions), Clapton were in buoyant mood as they took to the field against perennial rivals Coppermill Swifts. The home side were looking to avenge a narrow 5-3 reverse back in November, and with significant progress made since that time across the squad, confidence was high.
This self-belief played out in the first half, with Clapton racing into a two-goal lead, thanks to some sublime wing play and clinical finishing. Further goals were expected, but did not quite happen, and it took several timely interventions by the Clapton rearguard to preserve the two-goal advantage as the half-time break arrived.

With a complete change of line-up coming into the second period, some disruption was perhaps inevitable, and so it proved as Coppermill came out of the blocks with visibly more intensity. A flurry of goals at the Clapton end and suddenly the visitors were ahead. However, that spirit mentioned earlier again came to the fore, and it was the hosts’ turn to put on a show. Three Clapton goals turned the tide in their favour, as supporters could barely catch their breath.
Refusing to go down without a fight, back came Coppermill, and only some awe-inspiring saves by the Clapton keeper, plus several last-ditch clearances, meant the lead was preserved. The full-time whistle, greeted with rapturous applause, signalled the end of a truly bonkers football match.

This was a game which had everything: attacking flair, dogged defending, craft and guile in the midfield, goalkeeping heroics, comebacks from both teams, and that unenviable Clapton spirit which runs through everyone at this fantastic club.
Final Score: Clapton CFC 5 – 4 Coppermill Swifts
Huge thanks must go out to everyone who worked hard to make this game happen, as well as the club for allowing us to grace the hallowed turf for a night. Shout outs are also due to Coppermill Swifts, who embraced the experience fully and played their part in making this a great occasion for all.
