Clapton CFC women’s first team’s opening game POSTPONED due to clash with World Cup

The opening game of the women’s first team season has been postponed due to the World Cup Final taking place on the same day.

CCFC were due to start the new London & South East Regional Women’s Football League season at home to Sport London e Benfica at the Old Spotted Dog Ground.

However, most games at our level have been postponed to allow players to watch the game, including ours. That means the season will start the following Sunday, away at the same opponents.

However, the World Cup final will still be screened on the big screen in the OSD Clubhouse. Whether you’re supporting England, Spain or neither, members and friends are welcome. First come first served, and with players and volunteers wanting to watch, spaces could be limited.

The Disraeli Road gate will open at 10.30am with kick off in Australia at 11am. There’s no charge for admission. Please note the bar won’t be serving till 12 noon but there are free hot drinks available before then.

The planned bucket shake for Tesfay has been postponed to another time, but you can still donate online.

It may be a day for seeking alternative public transport routes. There is no service on the Gospel Oak to Barking Overground Line until 12:30pm on Sunday between South Tottenham and Barking Riverside, and there is no service between Gidea Park and Liverpool Street on the Elizabeth Line.

Stratford Station (National Rail/Overground/Elizabeth/Jubilee/Central/DLR) is 25 minutes’ walk away. The Jubilee and Central Lines, and Overground Lines into Stratford are scheduled to run as normal, but there appears to a fair amount of engineering works taking place on National Rail routes in the area. Check individual operators if you may be affected.

There’s space to leave your bikes inside the Old Spotted Dog Ground, to the right of the outdoor toilets. You can lock them to the fencing. It’s best to arrive early so you don’t have to push your bike through crowds. Please don’t leave them locked to the pitch perimeter as it blocks the walkway.

Parking is free on the streets to the north and west of the ground (e.g. Disraeli Rd) on Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturdays, parking is restricted on streets to the east and south of the ground (e.g. St George’s Rd and Upton Lane), but there are no restrictions on Sundays. Always check local signage for any changes. And if possible come by public transport, bike or walk.
